I look forward to Scientific Sessions every year as a time to connect with old friends and colleagues, meet new ones, and as a catalyst to reinvigorate my thinking through new collaborations and ideas. For me, the meeting demonstrates the power of collaborative thinking and learning, and the opportunity to create something bigger by working together.
Volunteers and staff spend the whole year planning agendas and developing leading-edge curricula for learning. But the most stimulating learning often occurs during the “in-between” moments when colleagues discuss what they have heard and are thinking aloud about the ideas that most stimulate and inspire them.
In my 15 years as CEO of HRS, what attendees tell me they find most rewarding about Heart Rhythm Scientific Sessions is the opportunity to meet and learn from others in the field. Whether you are the world’s leading expert on a topic or someone just beginning in our field, you can learn something by collaborating with other HRS members.
Our annual meeting has changed a lot over the past 15 years. We have grown in depth and breadth and continually sought ways – both high-tech and high-touch – to enrich your experience as an attendee. While the science has evolved continuously and the strategic issues have changed from year to year, I know I can always count on our members’ commitment and willingness to share their knowledge, experience and time.
In a specialty field as focused and unique as ours, it is primarily through collaborative relationships that we advance our knowledge and elevate the ability of everyone who is committed to our mission of ending death and suffering due to heart rhythm disorders. Our Society and the annual meeting offer so many opportunities for professionals to learn from each other, and to think about issues in creative and innovative ways.
Members in the rising generation face many unique professional challenges, and they bring new ways of thinking and problem solving that are exciting and advantageous to the field. Long-time members have a continuing passion for the Society, a commitment to sharing knowledge, and a determination to continue to move the field forward. I know that each group will benefit from interacting with the others, and I urge you to use this once-a-year opportunity to expand your circle of relationships.
Together, we… learn more, do more, are more.
I look forward to seeing many of you engaged in dynamic conversations over the next few days. If you are a member, I know you will bring your best thinking and a collaborative spirit to our sessions, workshops and informal networking opportunities. If you are not yet a member, I ask you to join us. If you share our mission, you already belong.
